Health Management
Industrial Hygiene
Activities associated with the marine construction
industry including painting, abrasive blasting, welding, and
high noise activities have the potential to expose personnel
to unacceptable health risk. An industrial hygiene program
has been established to assess potential risk of worker exposure
to toxic and hazardous substances and noise at its facilities
and on its vessels. Controls and PPE guidelines have been
established to protect workers against excessive exposure.
Periodic monitoring is performed to verify controls are adequate.
Medical Screening
All applicants offered employment by JRM must
undergo a pre-employment examination that includes a physical
examination, hearing test, back evaluation, and drug screen.
In addition, specific crafts are required to pass a physical
examination at least annually.
Food Preparation
Food preparation areas in yards and in the vessel
galleys are required to implement a quality assurance program
to ensure they are safe. It includes an assessment of hazards
and the severity and probability of occurrence, critical processing
or handling control points, implementing control measures,
monitoring critical control points, and taking immediate action
to correct problems.
Wellness
Wellness initiatives have been implemented throughout
JRM with the mission of promoting physical, mental, and social
well-being for employees and their families. Activities include
health awareness literature, health screening, fitness programs,
immunizations, and smoking cessation programs.
Case Management
A policy has been established that requires
all personnel who sustain any type of work related injury,
illness, or near miss, no matter how slight to their immediate
supervisor. A JRM designated medical care provider reviews
all work-related cases and assigns a company representative
to monitor and manage the case including arrangements of outside
assistance, transportation of injured personnel to medical
care providers, and follow-up on actions taken or medical
treatment given as required. In addition, temporary work assignments
are provided whenever possible for employees with a medical
disability due to an injury. This program allows them to continue
to perform productive and necessary work while restricted
from their normal job responsibilities.
