PRESS RELEASE: September 26, 2005

J. Ray Completes Fabrication of its Second Topsides for Caspian Sea

Less than one year after completing fabrication of the Central Azeri topsides for Azerbaijan International Operating Company (AIOC), McDermott Caspian Contractors, Inc. (MCCI), the Caspian operating subsidiary of J. Ray McDermott, S.A. (J. Ray), has completed fabrication of the second topsides for the Azeri, Chirag and deepwater Gunashli (ACG) fields. On 21 September, after 32 months of dedicated construction, the project team bid farewell to the nearly 16,000MT West Azeri (WA) integrated deck, the largest built to date in the Caspian. WA was fabricated for the Phase 2 development of the ACG fields operated by AIOC, in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea.

“We are extremely proud to report that this world-class construction project, the second in a series of deck fabrication and pipeline installation projects for AIOC, was accomplished ahead of schedule,” said Dan Houser, Vice President & General Manager, Caspian operations. “This is a major milestone for our operations in the Caspian.”

MCCI’s scope of work includes the onshore fabrication, assembly, onshore hook-up, commissioning and loadout of the deck, as well as offshore hook-up, commissioning and start-up assistance. Fabrication was primarily done in Azerbaijan utilizing the infrastructure, equipment and labor of the Baku Deepwater Jacket Factory (BDJF). Almost five million manhours were expended on the fabrication of the WA topsides, and more than 85% of this work was completed by local Azerbaijani craftsmen.

“This summer MCCI also completed a heavy lift program to install the living quarters and drilling modules on the East Azeri topsides (EA) for the Phase 2 development of the ACG fields,” continued Dan Houser. “Construction of EA, which is a clone of the WA topsides, is proceeding ahead of schedule.”

Under contract to AIOC, MCCI is also responsible for pipeline installation for the Phase 2 of the ACG project. “The installation work is progressing well,” said Dan Houser. “By early September, the pipelay barge Israfil Huseynov, had installed 209 km of the required 275 km of pipeline.”
