The internally developed part numbering
system is called The Unique Materials Identifier Catalog (UID).
It consists of a unique eight-digit number that has an associated
material description, utilizing the industry standard format for
numbering systems of noun and modifying adjectives. This number
is used to transfer material requirements and information across
all the functions in the Materials Management solution. There is
an option to include additional attributes to an item using the
'+4' facility. This enables project specific modifications, such
as chemical analysis variations, to be added.
Material descriptions follow structured formats that are used for
both the build and search functions and ensure that a common standard
reference number is established for each individual item. The catalog
provides a quick and efficient method of determining if the item
being investigated is a new item, or if the item already exists.
Search techniques used in the UID catalog offer a great deal of
flexibility. Inquiries are available by Manufacturer's part number,
Manufacturer's name and single, multiple or partial word search.
A general search can also be used where the system will prompt you
for more detail as selections are made, until the specific number
is identified.
